This portrait of Henry VII was commissioned

in 1505 for Margaret of Savoy, whom he hoped

to marry. It failed to persuade her of the

ageing king’s charms.

Thought to have been made for Henry VII and

Elizabeth of York in 1495, this may be the only

Tudor royal bed in existence.

Some Tudor birthing methods were

surprisingly modern, such as the

positions that were recommended

in the final stages of labour.
